Nothing will lead you down a time-wasting black hole faster than researching an article on time wasting at work. There are as many websites out there with actual suggestions on how to waste your time online as there are websites listing time wasting statistics. I set out this morning to write an article about time wasting at work – a practice my company, Sangfor Technologies, tries to help curtail with their IAM (internet access management) product, a ground breaking Internet behaviour management solution designed to do so much more than just manage access.
Even for employees who are inspired by their jobs (I’d count myself in this category), there is no end to the number of things that can distract you during the work day. According to the article The Top Ways Staff Waste Time at Work by Akankasha Dewan, 55% of staff are distracted by texting and cell phones, 41% by the internet and 37% by social media. This is especially true in the APAC region where we use our phones and social media for work related activities as well as personal communication on platforms like WeChat, Line, Weibo, QQ and sometimes Facebook. To get a bit more specific, SimilarWeb.com has ranked the world’s most visited sites on the web as follows:
You could make a case for using a few of these websites at work, especially if you work in certain departments like Marketing, but there are others (ahem…#7 and #9) which have no place in the office. In addition to promoting significantly lower productivity, sites like this often put browsers at risk of infection from malware or ransomware – you would think people would be too embarrassed to explain to IT how they exposed private data to ransomware browsing adult websites, but, C'est la vie.
The Sangfor Solution:
