VDI was first developed in its most rudimentary form around 2002 (who exactly invented it is in question depending on where you look) and has grown exponentially ever since. According to the Global Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Market Insights, Opportunity, Analysis, Market Shares and Forecast 2017 – 2023, the global VDI market is projected to have a CAGR of 27% between 2016-2023, with the APAC region expected to emerge as the fastest growing market. VDI is widely thought to provide the best user experience while simultaneously eliminating the need to purchase and maintain PC’s while securing any corporate intellectual property. According to Aaron Suzuki, CEO of Prowess Consulting and SmartDeploy, VDI is beneficial because, “Instead of managing thousands of endpoints independently, VDI provides single-image management of a centralized golden image of an operating system and each application.”

A typical environment where VDI might be deployed is a University managing a large number of PC’s, or a call center or financial institution maintaining multiple branches and/or working with contractors. For example, City University of Macau recently sought out a VDI solution to help with the overall management of their library PC’s, which were time consuming and difficult to maintain individually, as well as often abused by student downloads and gaming websites.

Most recently we’ve seen the emergence of a new form of VDI. Hybrid VDI takes the best elements of the most popular PC management models and weaves it into a “centralized, layered, single-image management like VDI, but where the image runs locally on the endpoint with low implementation cost, fast planning, and setup as well as operated by any IT skillset." Techgenix.com recently published an interview entitled What in the world is hybrid VDI? And is it right for you? with Aaron Suzuki, defining Hybrid VDI and a few use cases like architectural and engineering firms and the manufacturing industry, who both find themselves working between offices or factories in more remote areas but still require CPU and GPU processing power on all employee PCs – something that VDI certainly provides.

As VDI continues to develop, it’s seen more varying use cases. In a 2018 study by TechNavio entitled, “Growing VDI Market in the APAC Region Will Lead to Enhanced Security Measures on Servers by 2018,” Faisal Ghaus, VP of TechNavio says, “With the increased uptake in virtualized solutions, there is a pressing need to incorporate security features as part of the enterprise infrastructure.” Bank of Communications (BOCOM) Vietnam recently adopted a VDI solution to address just this issue, having experienced data loss and leakage and poor backup management. By adopting a flexible combo of solutions like VDI, Internet access management (IAM), and aDesk management console – developed specially for BOCOM by Sangfor Technologies, full network visibility and control was achieved, management was simplified and data leakage was all but halted.
