OVH DataCenter Disaster Recovery for blog

What was the OVH Fire Incident? We, in the IT industry, often speak of fire in terms of network security functions of speed of services, but how does an actual burning fire affect your cyber security? In terms of disaster recovery of course! OVH is the largest hosing provider in Europe and the third-largest provider in the world, providing cloud computing functions like dedicated servers, VPS, and numerous others. Octave Klaba of OVH addressed the fire which destroyed the OVH data centers located in Strasbourg, France, by advising customers to “activate your disaster recovery Plan,” as their data centers around the world became unserviceable and customer websites were seriously impacted.

Example of unreachable OVH servers

As a result of this disaster, OVH were distressed to discover that their web services were unavailable, impacting gaming sites like those belonging to videogame maker Rust, cryptocurrency exchange Deribit, telecom company AFR-IX, encryption utility VeraCrypt, news outlet eeNews Europe, the art building complex Centre Pompidou, among countless others. Millions of others to be exact, with OVH hosting down, government agencies, portals, banks, stores and shops, news websites and a huge number of .FR web space was affected. Many without disaster recovery functions or capabilities – and many losing everything.

While Deribit told BleepingComputer that docs and blog sites were the only areas affected, companies like Rust lost 100% of their data with no recovery option.  Rust tweeted, "We've confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH data centre fire. We're now exploring replacing the affected servers. Data will be unable to be restored."

What is disaster recovery?

Disaster recovery, often seen written as DR, is a security plan in place to protect an organization in the event they fall victim to a natural disaster or cyber-attack. A good disaster recovery plan will allow an organization to resume business and recover data or systems quickly after a disaster of any kind. Download Sangfor Disaster Recovery Brochure.

What is the ideal disaster recovery plan?

IBM reports that the average total cost of a data breach is now $3.86 million, with some companies reported to have shelled out up to 350.44 million after a disaster. Nakivo says a good disaster recovery plan should check a few standard boxes. Read our recent blog article on Edge Computing Virtualization which talks about Disaster Recovery plan.
