It’s the beginning of the year, and that means it’s time for the yearly predictions for what to expect in 2021 technology, and government is watching closely. With governments now under very public attack (like the recent Anonymous attacks on the Malaysian government), it’s becoming clear that government needs to step-up their data privacy game, or be held accountable.
In our opinion, one of the first place to visit for upcoming tech trends and updates is Gartner Inc., and their Top 10 Government Tech Trends for 2021.* Gartner VP of Research, Rick Howard, said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred the acceleration of digital innovation across the government sector around the world, presenting government leaders with new opportunities to use data and technologies to build trust, agility and resilience in public institutions,” Gartner research vice president Rick Howard said.
“While pandemic-related challenges will continue for some time, technology trends have emerged that address critical challenges in areas such as security, cost containment and citizen experience.”
According to Gartner, “Gartner’s list of strategic technology trends is directly linked to public administration and policy issues that government leaders must address. Government CIOs can use this list to identify technology trends that best address their post-pandemic recovery priorities and establish the rationale, timing and priority of technology investments.”
- Accelerated Legacy Modernisation
- Adaptive Security
- Anything as a service (XaaS)
- Case Management as a Service (CMaaS)
- Citizen Digital Identity
- Composable Government Enterprise
- Data Sharing as a Program
- Hyperconnected Public Services
- Multichannel Citizen Engagement
- Operationalised Analytics
Many government offices are already seeking out and finding the data protection, connection, and recovery they need in today’s dangerous and unpredictable threat landscape.
The biggest obstacle for governments is the inherent mistrust they have for the cloud. They have known for years the cloud is not secure and do not want to place confidential or classified data within it. In fact, many governments still employ aging networks and systems that are not connected to the internet directly to maintain control of sensitive or classified data. However, these legacy systems are becoming unsupportable or, at least, too expensive to maintain. But some governments are looking to the future by building their own private clouds using special certified secure cloud instances from cloud vendors.
